Matt Duncan – Beacon (2010)

Mix equal parts modern indie pop and classic doo-wop with some punchy horns and a boyish frontman crooning while his fingers tickle the ivories, and you have Matt Duncan. The Lexington KY native and his group of backing musicians may not travel much, but they are quickly making a name for themselves not only in Lexington, but also elsewhere. Opportunities like having a song on a hit HBO show don’t just drop in most people’s laps, but Mr. Duncan can gladly add it to his resume, alongside a song on the ABC drama, Private Practice.

‘Beacon’ is the type of album that any young band would kill to make, but rarely are able to achieve. It is smart and at times tongue-in-cheek, but always clever and certain to get your toes to tapping. Add to that a killer live show that is nothing less than high-energy, Matt Duncan and Co. are laying a solid foundation for a very long and successful career.

Head over to Bandcamp and check out the album, drop $4 in support, and even check out the B-Side track, “Summer Song” which, if it had been released in the 1950s, would have been hoppin’ on every jukebox in the country.

Also, rumor has it he is working on his first proper full-length. Keep your ear to the ground as this guy is set to explode into the stratosphere at any given moment.
